Mr. Johnny Hawkins is an instructor with North Carolina Central University, an academic partner of the RDPC.
Mr. Hawkins began his career with the North Carolina Department of Correction, Division of Prisons, in September 1993, as a correctional officer serving at Caswell Correctional Center located in Yanceyville, NC. In April 1997, he transferred to Polk Correctional Institution located in Butner, NC as a correctional officer. In January 1998, he was promoted to correctional sergeant and served in several capacities, including internal affairs, staff development and shift operations. In June 2001, he was promoted to the position of correctional lieutenant serving as shift officer in charge, facility intelligence officer and staff development coordinator.
In September 2004, Mr. Hawkins transferred to the Division of Prisons Administration, Security Services. During this time, he served as liaison to the Division of Prisons Security Threat Group Management Program, managed the Drug Interdiction Program and Inmate Drug Testing Program. In July 2007, he was promoted to operation/intelligence manager for the North Carolina Division of Prisons. His duties included managing security and supervisory staffing, unit management program coordinator, Administrative Remedy Board liaison, counter terrorism coordinator, homeland security coordinator, and intelligence coordinator. In addition, he served as division level manager of the Security Threat Group Management Unit Program (STGMU). In April 2010, Mr. Hawkins was promoted to his current position as the assistant superintendent of custody/operations at Warren Correctional Institution in Manson, NC.
